This Day In History of the Day: On May 17, 1861 — exactly 150 years ago — Scottish physicist James Clerk Maxwell and photographer Thomas Sutton (who invented the SLR camera that same year) used three projectors fitted with red, green, and blue filters to combine three black-and-white photos of a tartan ribbon shot through similar filters, thereby forming the world’s first color photo (above) and, consequently, the “basis of nearly all subsequent photochemical and electronic methods of colour photography.”

“Now used as a euphemism for intracorporate assassinations (e.g. ‘We may have to take a dip in the Executive Pool on this one.’), ‘Executive Pool’ in the 2050s and 2060s simply referred to a secret chamber found in most investment firms that non-board members were invited to only on occasions of promotion or ritual self-drowning due to subpar quarterly results.”

Trailer - Raga: A Film Journey into the Soul of India (1971)

The Ravi Shankar Foundation’s record label East Meets West Music is about to re-release this film, completely remastered.  I already pre-ordered.  Who wants to have a film night party with me?

“Originally released in 1971, Raga: A Journey into the Soul of India documents the life of sitar master Ravi Shankar in the late 1960s and early 1970s… Fully narrated by Shankar himself, Raga reveals music as the soul of India and of Shankar’s life.”

Scheduled for October 14 on DVD.

PREMIERE: Julian Lynch - Just Enough

I’m happy to share a video I just finished for one of my favorite tracks off Julian’s stunning album Mare. Its made from footage of my own childhood, a mood and tone I thought matched this gorgeous song (also included in a previous yvynyl mixtape).  If you haven’t already, do go pick up his record from Olde English Spelling Bee
